The Y&R Bad Boy Pens a Good Guy’s Guide to Living.

This is a recent article by CBS Soaps in Depth announcing the release of Sean’s book.

THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS’ Deacon Sharpe may not be the type of guy mothers want their daughters to marry, but in real life, his portrayer, Sean Kanan, has written a guide with plenty of good advice and tips for today’s man. The Modern Gentleman Cooking And Entertaining With Sean Kanan is available starting Tuesday, September 13. “I don’t want people to think this is another cookbook by a celebrity,” Kanan tells Soaps In Depth. “Yes, it started out as a ‘cookbook’ and there are recipes in it, but the last thing that this is is a cookbook. I wanted to write a book that would help people with relationships.”

Kanan’s tome advises men on how to maneuver in today’s ever-changing world. “Men have never had a mentor,” the actor muses. “Women have had Oprah and Martha Stewart, but men have never had anyone to teach them a lot of the stuff that women wish they knew how to do.”

In addition to recipes, Kanan offers advice on everything from how men should treat women to how guys can set the dinner table. “I’m tired of hearing my friends say that they’re a nice guy and can’t get a date. My book deals with dating, sexual politics and flower arranging. I even have a chapter on ‘sexting.’”

The actor plans to juggle his on-going Y&R role while doing a book tour. Check www.SeanKananTheModernGentleman.com to purchase the book and to see if Kanan’s coming to a bookstore near you!

An Update From the Author: 8.31.11

Haven’t blogged in a few days. There has simply been too much to do. But, there are a few things on my mind. Forgive me for being sporadic.

Michele and I have been prepping for the New York trip. It should be a great one.

The number of twitter followers has been climbing steadily. I am looking forward to gifting the black belts once I reach 5000 followers.

I have no idea what is going on with Y/R. I just deleted my last two sentences. I don’t like censoring myself but feel it prudent. I am pouring all of my energy into promoting the book. Its success is providing me with much needed validation that certainly does not come from Y/R.

I have two speaking engagements this week and just realized I have an interview in twelve minutes. Back to work!

BTW, there is still time to order a signed book now. I am getting books sent to me tomorrow and can get them out well before September 13. Order here!

Making an Impression During a Recession.

This is a recent article by Adam Bernard, in which he interviews Sean and discusses his book “The Modern Gentleman: Cooking & Entertaining with Sean Kanan.”

All of my friends have at least one thing in common (other than knowing me) – they’re all looking for the best ways to stretch a dollar. It seems everyone is either underemployed or underpaid, and this can lead to people thinking they have limited options for entertainment.

When options get limited people tend to stay at home. Sometimes a traditional house party, a la Kid ‘n Play, can be fun, but there are other times when you don’t want your toilet clogged or to feel the need to hide what few nice things you may have. You also may want to try to woo your significant other with something a little classier than Dollar Menu drive-through pick up. With this in mind I caught up with two authors who are experts in fields of entertaining and dating – Sean Kanan, whose acting credits include The Young and The Restless and The Bold and The Beautiful, and whose book, The Modern Gentleman: Cooking and Entertaining with Sean Kanan, hits stores on Sept. 13th, and Enitan Bereola, whose book, Bereolaesque: The Contemporary Gentleman & Etiquette Book For The Urban Sophisticate, has led to him having numerous relationship columns on sites such as SoulTrain.com and a devoted following on Twitter – and asked them to give out some tips on how to make an impression during a recession.

Adam Bernard: When inviting someone into your home, either for a date, or a small gathering, what are some of the best ways to make an impression during a recession?

Sean Kanan: Almost all of us are feeling the sting from the fangs of the recession. The good news is that you do not have to spend a ton of dough to have a great time entertaining at home. If money is really tight consider hosting a brunch. You can make eggs and pancakes very inexpensively. Serve Bloody Marys with a wide and varied assortment of garnishes. If you opt for dinner there are an almost endless number of inexpensive pasta options. Pair with a unique salad choice such incorporating something slightly offbeat like fennel or heart of palm and either walnuts or pecans (make certain no one is allergic to nuts). Finish up with a selection of gelati with chopped fresh fruit and a nice garnish like mint or cocoa. Sometimes incorporating a slight change in location, like the outside balcony, patio, terrace, etc., or pillows on the floor, can mix things up nicely. Put together a dinner specific playlist and lots of candles and you are on your way. Lastly, economics often mean sacrifice. If you want to host one special person you will most likely have more resources. More people will spread your culinary/entertainment dollars more thinly. Plan ahead and remember the five P’s – Prior Preparation Prevents Poor Performance.

Enitan Bereola: A man’s place of dwelling is his castle and speaks volumes about his life. Your home decor is your opportunity to display your style and expose a portion of your soul without saying a word. You can easily take honor in your home without breaking your bank. Your walls aren’t meant to be bare – put some art up. You don’t have to go out and get a Basquiat, find the graphic designer within and manipulate existing digital photos on your laptop. Technology makes it easier for you to be a modern day Warhol. Print your work, put it in a frame and it’s as simple as that. Making impressions are important but most importantly, be you.

In Sean’s interview with Bryan Cox on “Get Off My Lawn,” he reveals a lot about his new book The Modern Gentleman. He also references several other topics including:

  • His intentions to help men avoid the “friend box.”
  • How the book uses food as a metaphor for connecting.
  • How he originally learned to cook.
  • Where you can get “The Modern Gentleman: Cooking & Entertaining with Sean Kanan.”
  • His issues with Time Warner Inc. because of their poor service.

An Update from the Author: 8.25.11

I am starting to feel the effects of working 18 hour days. I suppose I am lucky that I am not taping Y/R. I taped “Showbiz Tonight” which was fun apart from the earpiece falling out of my ear several seconds before they cut to me. Thank goodness a tech came in and saved the day because otherwise it would have been a disaster. I was also booked on Good Day LA for this Friday which is huge. I will finally receive physical copies of the book tomorrow for the Y/R fan event Friday. I can’t wait to see how it looks.

An Update From the Author: 8.23.11

In two days I will finally come face to face with an actual copy of my book. In fact, I will have two hundred copies that I will bring to the Young and the Restless fan event on Friday. It cost a small fortune to have these books shipped in time for the event but I cannot think of any group more deserving. The Y/R fans have been so supportive of me.

Writing the book was definitely tedious at times. The editing and proofing stage, even more so. However, neither of those compare to the focused mania required to promote the book as the countdown to the September 13 release ticks away. These last days have been divided between phone interviews, written interviews, tending to my social networks, tweaking this website with Eddie and trying to connect with my family.

I am really emotionally invested in the book and hope that it gets a fair chance for exposure. I can honestly say I am doing everything within my ability.

Michele and Anthony have been invaluable friends and partners in this endeavor. I hope they know how much I love and appreciate them both.

Original ArticleThe Modern Gentleman-Cooking and Entertaining With Sean Kanan

I had the most delicious conversation with daytime’s baddest bad boy, the one and only, The Modern Gentleman: Sean Kanan ( aka Deacon Sharpe of The Young and The Restless/ Bold and the Beautiful ) author, actor producer and self taught gourmet chef.

I had a few very specific questions for him but somehow passionate conversation with this funny and captivating man just took over and before you know it two hours just flew away…
We did manage to get one answer down on paper:

Florentina:  What would you have for your last supper on Earth ?

Sean Kanan: Egg rolls, Barbecue spare ribs, Oreo Cookie Milkshake, KFC drumsticks dunked in mashed potatoes, gravy and slaw while watching a movie in bed.

I love to ask this question because the answers are never what you would expect them to be – and it goes to prove my point every time: It is always back to the table and back to the bed! True story!

The bottom line is this : you need to get the book and you need to give a copy of this book to every man in your life so that they may learn and understand how to treat the women in their lives.

” The Modern Gentleman, Cooking and Entertaining with Sean Kanan ” is his first cookbook that I stayed up all night reading, word by word – Not only b/c I like to know what the heck it is that I’m talking about but b/c I was actually fully captivated by each page and his fantastic writing style.

No it wasn’t the spices nor his sexy photo that got me hooked but the fact that this is a highly educational and very important book!

From page one he takes today’s man back to school teaching all the things that us women hope and wish our date already has in his DNA.   From manners to dating and setting the table and the mood at home, to picking the engagement ring and behaving  as a gentleman, this bad boy is teaching men how to Win with sage advice: “ It’s not the size of the theater, it’s the talent on the stage “

The cookbook also has a nice range of recipes a lot of them inspired by Sean’s  stay in Italia while competing as a celebrity contestant on Ballardo con le Stelle ( The Italian version of Dancing with the Stars).

Like honey out of a comb Sean’s  passion for cooking, life and love oozes from every single page.

From Pappardelle Gemelle , Lobster Mac & Cheese  to Cannolis – the only problem with this book will be deciding what to make first – I’m having this dilemma right now !

I honestly love everything about this book, it is one of a kind and without a doubt the one cook book every man and woman should have on their book shelf.

” The Modern Gentleman offers women a front row seat in the theater of the male psyche and throws back the curtain.”

I also love a lot about the man behind the book, besides our common passion for cooking and family he is clearly a real genuine person in a town full of fakes.  He recently traveled to Washington DC to encourage Members of Congress to create anti-bullying legislation and for that I applaud and respect him enormously.

Please stop by to meet him at one of his upcoming book signings! Check the attached calendar at the end of the post.
