Bookstore Visits – 9.28.2011

Bookstar Barnes and Noble
A few days before the signing in Studio City I drove by the store and saw that they had placed my name up on the giant Bijou esque marquee. I stopped the car and had to take a few pictures. I was really moved. It suddenly became very palpable. I had written a book. It really didn’t matter how well it sold or even how well it would be received. Thursday evening we took two cars and drove to Bookstar which is only about two miles from our place. Everyone had a job. The twins were in charge of handing out candy and water. Peter took video testimonials and Gigi and Michele greeted people. I am so lucky to have all of them. There was a fair amount of press and lots of my friends showed up. The bookstore had ordered three hundred books. The first hour had a steady flow of people but thee was still time to socialize. I saw lots of people whom I hadn’t seen in a very long time including Connor Carmody who played my son on Bold and the Beautiful. I was struck by how many kind and supportive friends I have. The second hour was definitely much busier. I signed dozens of books while my friends and people I did not know mingled. Luciano Saber had come to interview me for AspiringHollywood.com. He also interviewed other actors such as Charlene Tilton, Christian LeBlanc, Patrika D’arbo, Orien Richmond and Rowan Blanchard. Later we all went across the street for dinner at Mexicali. It was a great evening.

The Drama Book Store
I was really concerned that rain was going to kill the event. It had been drizzling for several hours preceding the signing. Michele and I arrived at the bookstore on West 40th street. The wind was really blowing and it was surprisingly cold. The staff was very friendly and had placed a small table in the back of the bookstore for me. There were about a dozen people already waiting including Angie and Maria who are always at my side supporting me. The most difficult thing for me to do at these signings is not get up and wander the aisles looking at books. I simply love getting lost in a bookstore. Several friends came to the signing as well as a really nice couple from Texas whom I had met several days earlier at the hotel where my parents were staying. They were in town for a few days waiting to go to Paris. The signing was a real success. Although the store only purchased a few dozen books we sold all but a handful which the store had me sign. They remained there for sale.

During their chat The Bold and The Beautiful, Sunset Beach and General Hospital alum shares how his passion for making delicious meals and showing guys they can still be a “man’s man” and a good entertainer at the same time, inspired him to write the tome.

Kanan outlines how confusing it can be for today’s man when trying to navigate a post feminist society, while also being a gentleman . He also weighs in on the Metrosexual movement of the late 90′s and early 2000′s.

Of course, we couldn’t have one of our favorite soap baddies on with talking a little suds. Melody ThomasScott is back on a contract at Y&R, this has Luke wondering if we’ll see more of Deacon and Nikki in the coming weeks and months. Meanwhile, Jamey is still holding out “Hope” for Kanan to return to B&B, where his wildly popular character originated. Find out what Kanan has to say about all of that.

Sean Kanan Dishes About His New Book…
Genoa City’s resident bad boy Sean Kanan is showing off his charming side with his new book “The Modern Gentleman: Cooking and Entertaining with Sean Kanan” .

The book, which came out nationwide September 13th, is “much more than a cookbook” according to Sean Kanan and we agree with him. It certainly isn’t your typical celebrity written cookbook. Sean hasn’t had any formal training; he learned how to cook in college as a way to offer dates something he felt others may not be able to – a home cooked meal. Sean offers well written witty advice ranging from cooking and entertaining to the effort and attention that creates real connections. Sean has advice for men and women alike – from how to be a gentleman without being put into the “friend box” and giving women an insight into how men think.

We sat down with Sean at the Y&R Fan Event to get the scoop on his new book. Watch the video above!

A Gentleman’s Guide to Sexting.

The Internet Revolution has given birth to miraculous technological advancements. Along with them, a litany of new meanings to old verbs has arisen such as fishing (“phishing”), surfing, texting and the newly coined “sexting.”

To not talk about these advancements would be ignoring what has emerged as significant rituals within dating in the new millennium. Besides, a gentleman void of sexting skills could be labeled many things, but surely not modern.

The question isn’t so much “if” the modern gentleman sexts. Rather, it’s when and within what parameters?

Because we have all born witness to the destructive and catastrophic results occurring from the inappropriate conveyance of flirtatious dialogue (including photos via the Internet and smart phones), sexting as a modern gentleman must be performed with certain guidelines of conduct.

1. The 99% Rule.
First and foremost, the MG must be 99% certain that his intended recipient will be receptive before engaging in the risky business of sexting. The absolute last thing you want to do is embarrass, alienate or anger the object of your affections.

2.  Wade in slow.
Throw out some subtle innuendo to feel the temperature of the waters. The consequences of digitally forcing yourself upon the intended target could be hazardous to good results.

3. Eject if needed.
This point coincides with the previous one, but if at any point you sense resistance or a lack of receptiveness, stop immediately. Tomorrows a new day and there’s no shame in trying again then.

4. Be clever, not vulgar.
Remember that the object is to arouse, not offend.

5. Be very sure you’re sexting the right person.
All of us know someone this has happened too. Don’t be as unfortunate as they were. Pay very close attention when pressing that send button. Trust me when I tell you that sending a text to the wrong contact is easier than you think.

6. DELIVER.
Last, but absolutely not least, be sure that your fingers aren’t writing promissory notes that your reality can’t cash. The Modern Gentleman always delivers on what he promises.

Do you have any sexting-gone-wrong stories to tell me? How about you women…whats has worked well in the past when your men have engaged in digital flirtation?

The Modern Gentleman Is A Nice Guy, But Not a “Nice Guy.”

The emergence of the women’s movement allowed women to make a quantum leap forward with regard to personal freedom and options compared to their counterparts from the late fifties and early sixties. Clearly society has gone a long way to level the socio-economic playing field between the sexes. However, it has not been without its casualties. One of the most insidious has been the feminization of the male population as embodied by the “nice guy” who gets slammed into the dreaded “friend box.”

Let me explain….

When women describe a potential mate, it’s often all about finding a “nice guy.” It is natural for guys to give them what they ask for. After all, men are fixers and doers. However, many men today experience frustration and confusion concerning how they should behave with women because what constitutes a “nice guy” is up for much debate. The modern gentleman is a nice guy, but definitely not a “nice guy.”

An Update from the Author: 9.6.11

Labor Day – Cleaned the garage today, all day in preparation for the arrival of my books. I am having over a thousand copies of my book delivered to the house so I had to make lots of room. This week will definitely be hectic in preparation for the NY trip. I just booked the morning show for CW. I will be preparing one of my dishes. This will be the first time I have cooked on television. It should be interesting. I am already hearing from lots of people who say they will come to the signing at the Drama book store. I am really looking forward to meeting everyone.

The Elvis Kit.

There are two types of men in this world – Elvis men & Beatles men.

Neither is more right than the other, just different. However, The Modern Gentleman is definitely an Elvis man. Here’s why…

One of the guys in the King’s “Memphis Mafia,” the first real posse of the music world, had the responsibility to carry with him a cigar box full of various “items” Elvis deemed indispensable and could never find himself caught without.

The Modern Gentleman always prepares for any eventuality that he may encounter. And since the future remains unseen, you need to think like the King and plan ahead. Hence the “Elvis kit.”

I keep mine in a black leather overnight kit, not too different than a shaving kit. Inside I keep the following items for myself and anyone who may need something they’ve forgotten. Here’s what you’ll find inside.

  • Spare pair of contact lenses with lens case and solution
  • Tooth brush, tooth paste, dental floss and mouthwash
  • Deodorant
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Moisturizing lotion and sunscreen
  • Hair gel and hair brush
  • Bandages
  • Double stick tape (wardrobe malfunctions)
  • Bar of soap (hotel size)
  • Shampoo/Conditioner (hotel size)
  • Disposable razor
  • Lysol (travel size)
  • Pair of latex gloves (you just never know)
  • Pen/pencil
  • Twenty dollars
  • Clean pair of socks, boxers and a plain white crew neck t-shirt
  • Various single use packages of pain relievers, allergy medication, and stomach remedies
  • Folding lock blade knife
  • Flashlight
  • Compass
  • Fluorescent glow sticks (accidents and raves can happen at any time)
  • and a few other trademarked secrets I reserve for my inner circle

The Modern Gentleman will understand the importance of investing the time it takes to put together his own “Elvis Kit.”
